12/15/12 Settling into Life in England
We arrived in England on November 14 and continue to settle into life here while enjoying some of the sights. It is now the winter season – cool temperatures, lots of rain showers and cloud cover. Thankfully we have a warm and comfortable flat in a quiet neighborhood. Below are a few pictures of our time in England.
(London) Big Ben in Queen Elizabeth Tower
London Eye by the Thames River. Winter is here and the breeze blowing over the river is cool.
(London) Tower Bridge after dark
(London) St Martin’s Cathedral has a wonderful restaurant in their underground crypt. In the floor are engraved stones that cover graves from hundreds of years ago.
(London) Enjoying cinnamon pretzels at the Christmas Market in Hyde Park
(Croydon) It’s not every day you see live, decorated holly bushes walking around and greeting shoppers!
(Reigate) We are blessed to live in this lovely apartment complex – a brisk 10-minute walk from work.
(Redhill) Shopping areas are within a healthy walking distance, so sometimes we use this cart to transport our groceries home.
(Croydon) We did not eat any eel, but the minced beef pies and mash (potatoes) were delicious.
(Redhill) Wherever we go, we find sisters and brothers in Christ!
(Reigate) We enjoyed traditional British food at this traditional English pub, built in the 1600’s.
(Reigate) It was our first time roasting chestnuts. Yes, we were humming, “chestnuts roasting on an open fire . . .”
(Redhill) Our local shopping center allowed local churches to have a carol program last Sunday night. It was an inspirational evening reminding us about the real meaning of Christmas.
(London) Yesterday (Dec 14), we went to Trafalgar Square to see the Christmas tree. Each year since 1947, a Christmas tree has been given to the people of London from the people of Norway in gratitude for Britain's support for Norway during World War II.
(London) We hoped to hear choirs singing Christmas songs, but instead we were surrounded by literally thousands of “Santas!” It seems that the young people of the city were having a “Santacon”. Maybe on another evening we can hear some traditional Christmas music at Trafalgar Square.
We enjoy walking in London. We hope that someday we will see the royal family!
