Christmas 2014 in Egypt – Pyramids and Sphinx

While in Cairo, we hired guides and camels, so we could travel to the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx from the Sahara desert.


There were 8 pyramids – 3 large pyramids by Pharaohs Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinos and 5 much smaller pyramids.   These pyramids are over 5,000 years old, so they could have been seen by Abraham, Joseph and Jesus during their time in Egypt.


Over the years much of the granite outer blocks have eroded and fallen off, but the pyramids are still impressive!


Here we are standing in the Sahara desert with the pyramids in the background.  The pyramids seem smaller, since they are far in the distance.


Richard climbed up a short way up one of the Cheops pyramid.   It is almost like climbing a mountain.


Suzanna posed at the base of the pyramid, so we could view the impressive height and size of the pyramid.


From the pyramids we could see Old Cairo in the distance.


Close to the pyramids is the famous Sphinx.  It is here in the chambers by the Sphinx that the pharaohs were mummified.





Here is Suzanna demonstrating how to properly dismount from a camel.  As the camel rocks back and forth as it settles down on its knees, the rider is rocked violently forward and backward, so it is necessary to hold on tightly.
